Featured Artists February 2013

The Art Market Gallery of Knoxville will feature an exhibit of recent works by two artists recently juried into the gallery, Kory Kiker and Katie White. Each uses a medium of expression in a distinctive manner.
Working in his father’s furniture refinishing shop at age 14 sparked Texas-born Kory Kiker’s creative interest in wood art and he soon won first prize in a wood-carving contest. Today, he “paints” with wood and loves to challenge himself to create new, thought-provoking ideas through an intricate process called intarsia. This is a style of pictorial inlay using a mosaic of wood pieces in their natural, unstained hues.
Katie White’s porcelain sculptures are created using both hand-building and wheel-throwing techniques. With nature a frequent source of inspiration since her years growing up on a farm in Illinois, this show features stylized versions of seed and egg shapes, each with the potential to blossom into something more intricate and beautiful. Often she contrasts the smooth translucence of porcelain with clay in its original state.
A First Friday opening reception for the exhibit is planned for 5:30 to 9 p.m., Friday, Feb. 1, with complimentary refreshments and live music: jazz, soul and fusion performed by saxophonist Marquis McGee.
Member owned and operated by more than 60 regional artists, the Art Market Gallery is located at 422 South Gay St., next to the Downtown Grill & Brewery, and a few doors down from Mast General Store.
