Featured Artists – February 2014

Recent works by oil painter Diana Dee Sarkar and wood-turner Gordon Fowler will be featured in an exhibit during the month of February at the Art Market Gallery in downtown Knoxville, and you are invited to the opening reception on Friday, Feb. 7.

The reception will be held from 5:30 to 9 p.m., during Knoxville’s monthly First Friday Art Walk downtown. It is a wonderful opportunity for patrons to meet the featured artists as well as other gallery members, listen to live music performed here by Living Room Roots, and enjoy complimentary refreshments.

Gordon Fowler, whose background includes carpentry and a degree in microbiology from University of Tennessee, studied at Arrowmont School of Arts & Crafts and the Kentucky School of Craft. He has been turning wood since 2002, concentrating on creating pleasing shapes with an eye to proportion, and creating works from recycled logs that otherwise would have gone into someone’s fireplace or the landfill.

Diana Dee Sarkar, who grew up in Wichita, KS, has studied with many noted artists. She holds a certificate from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, and is completing work on an MFA at Academy of Art University. Her paintings have been juried into a show at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art Museum, and the International Miniature Painting competition. She paints representationally in oil and pastel.

Both artists reside in Knoxville.

We look forward to seeing you for the opening reception. But, if you cannot join us on First Friday, you should know that the February show will run through the month and end on Sunday, March 2.

These days it’s easy to come downtown to visit our gallery. It is spacious, wheelchair accessible, and parking in the abutting garage behind our building and on the street, along with nearby public garages is free after 6 p.m. and on weekends.

Owned and operated by 63 professional regional artists, Art Market Gallery, at 422 S. Gay St., is just a few doors from Mast General Store and next to Downtown Grill & Brewery.
