Featured Artists June 2012

Enjoy complimentary refreshments and live folk music performed by Hartley Varnell, Kevin Rupp and Drew Ellis this Friday at the gallery from 5:30-9 pm.  This First Friday reception marks the opening of our Featured Artists Exhibit, a presentation of recent works by Linda Sullivan and Rod Fleming.

Linda Sullivan, who holds an MFA in ceramics, creates functional and sculptural vessels out of stoneware and porcelain clays.  Inspired by various landscapes and drawing on her strong background in painting, she employs a unique glazing process by pouring and overlapping her glazes in a purposeful, painterly way to depict landscape imagery.  She says, “viewers of my work often verbalize about being  reminded of landscapes from their own personal experiences and [share with me] the memories that the imagery evokes.”

Landscape painter Rod Fleming owes his interest in watercolor to the influence of the late Hubert Shuptrine.  A native of Arkansas, Rod originally used the Ozarks as inspiration for his paintings and now his landscape subjects are from the Great Smoky Mountains.  He says that “the sights and sounds of flowing water always hold my interest for the next painting.”

Be sure to visit the gallery on selected weekend days for live artist demonstrations.  Currently scheduled:  Encaustic painting by Hollie LaRue on Saturday June 9 and relief printmaking by Gay Bryant on Saturday June 16 and Saturday June 23.
